Mornington Peninsula

Portsea
Past & present.

In a 1925 aerial photograph of Portsea, the bend in the pier is easy to pick out against the bay. Down at street level, postcards show holidaymakers at Front Beach and cars drawn up outside the Portsea Hotel. Look above the verandah in the hotel photographs and you can follow the timber gables across both views.

On the ocean side, the opening in the rock at London Bridge gives you a point to line up the two photographs. Further west at Point Nepean, the 1946 view of Fort Pearce Barracks records buildings that have since disappeared. The headland beyond them still gives the site its familiar outline.

Portsea, then & now.
