Mornington Peninsula

Rye
Past & present.

Along Rye’s foreshore, the pier once served the lime trade. Limeburners fired local limestone in kilns, and the quicklime travelled across the bay to Melbourne. By the time the Rose Series photographers visited, their postcards also showed another side of Rye: cars parked by the water, people walking the pier and a hotel facing the road.

Look inland from the pier and the railings draw your eye straight to the shore. From higher ground, the outline of Arthurs Seat helps place the town as houses spread among the trees. Over on the ocean side, the headland beyond the Back Beach car park is still recognisable above the surf.

Rye, then & now.
